Fort Schoenenbourg - Maginot line

The Schoenenbourg Fort, located in Hunspach—voted France's favorite village in 2020—is a large artillery fort on the Maginot Line, built between 1931 and 1935. Thirty meters underground, it extends over nearly 3 kilometers of underground galleries, fully equipped with original features: an electricity production plant, a kitchen, barracks, a machine room, and, of course, the impressive combat blocks. The most heavily bombarded fort on the Maginot Line, it remained undefeated, surrendering only on the orders of the High Command. Restored since the 1980s by a team of passionate volunteers, the site now offers a unique visitor experience, allowing visitors to discover all the facilities of a complete, preserved and living military structure. Ranked second favorite monument in France in 2022, Fort Schoenenbourg is much more than a relic: it is a place of memory, history and emotion.
