This structure, dating from the late 19th century, underwent an extensive renovation and modernization project between the fall of 2016 and 2017.
The first phase of this project, part of the 2014–2024 Comprehensive Management Plan for the Ill River, included the construction of a canoe ramp and a fish passage.
The second phase of the work involved the reconstruction of the central piers and the dam bridge. The replacement and automation of the gates, as well as the renovation of the gondola lock or mini-lock, were also part of the plan.
The automation of these gates has restored navigability at the structure.
The dam was also equipped with six Archimedes screws, or slow-rotating turbines, designed for hydroelectric power generation.
This dam is none other than the main structure in the flood protection system for the town of Erstein and the Strasbourg Eurometropolis against flooding from the Ill River.
It also regulates the flow downstream of the “Cité Sucrière” to maintain recreational boating in the center of the Alsatian capital.
