The Belle-Île Orchards refer to a remarkable natural and historic area located south of the town of Ensisheim.
This area combines a rich ecological heritage with ancient Alsatian agricultural traditions.
Protected Area
This area is part of the “orchards and reed beds of the Ill River floodplain in Ensisheim,” a site classified as a ZNIEFF (Natural Area of Ecological, Faunistic, and Floristic Interest) due to its biodiversity.
Landscape
The locality is characterized by a high concentration of standard fruit trees (particularly apple trees), meadows, and wetlands.
Origin of the Name
The term “Belle-Île” is said to be a poetic reference to the bucolic landscape formed here by the branches of the Ill River and its proximity.
The Belle-Île area, located between the Saint-Jean farm and Les Octrois, is crossed by the Quatelbach, a historic irrigation canal.
This floodplain is home to a network of old masonry irrigation canals and sluices.
Although the old traditional irrigation system is no longer in use today, its remnants remain visible and are very popular on discovery tours.
