Statue of Saint John of Nepomuk - Saint-Jean Locality

The statue is located south of the town of Ensisheim, near the Ferme Saint-Jean and a bridge that spans the Ill River.

It is adjacent to the Sentier de l’Ill, a walking and biking trail marked with a blue diamond and featuring shared paths that run along the river.



This 19th-century statue was originally located on the Ill Bridge in Meyenheim and was removed and replaced in 1906; the owner of the Saint-Jean farm purchased it and erected it on his property in 1909, the date inscribed on the concrete base.

The sculpture is carved from Ose sandstone (in the round) and depicts Saint John of Nepomuk in a canon’s robe, holding the crucifix and the palm of the martyrs in his arms.

John of Nepomuk is one of the most revered saints, given the many forms of protection he offered: he is the patron saint of boatmen, bridges, priests, and all men who had some connection to water.
