Saint-Léger Church

First mentioned in the 13th century, the Church of Saint-Léger belonged to Murbach Abbey.

In the 15th century, responsibility for its upkeep was shared between the abbey and the village community.

In 1739, a new consecration is mentioned.



Despite repairs carried out in 1789, plans to demolish the church were considered as early as 1811, as its bell tower was in danger of collapsing.

The new church, built in the Neoclassical style, was constructed between 1842 and 1844 based on plans by architect Laubser.



The church originally housed a clock by Schwilgué (a Strasbourg-based manufacturer of clocks and dials), who also created the third astronomical clock at Strasbourg Cathedral.

The organ, commissioned from Claude Ignace Callinet of Rouffach in 1852, was designated a Historic Monument in 1977.

Its stained-glass windows date from 1886 and pay homage to the 14 intercessory saints, also known as healing saints or auxiliary saints.



The high altar was created by the renowned local sculptor Joseph Saur. It is adorned with a painting depicting Saint Léger receiving the palm of martyrdom (19th century).
