Lecture: The Hartmannswillerkopf, from Battlefield to a Symbol of Franco-German Friendship

Perched at an altitude of over 950 meters, the Hartmannswillerkopf (also known as Vieil Armand) was the main battlefield of the Vosges Front during World War I.

The site of fierce fighting in 1915, it became, over the course of the 20th century, a true national monument, shaped by the memories of veterans and the desire to pass on the history of this extraordinary site.



The centennial of the Great War marked another major milestone with the opening of the first Franco-German museum dedicated to this conflict, offering a comparative and educational perspective on mountain warfare and the site’s evolution up to the present day.



The speakers, Jean KLINKERT and Florian HENSEL, will offer a vivid and engaging interpretation of this important site of remembrance, where the history of the battles now intersects with that of reconciliation and Franco-German friendship.
