It is highly probable, even certain, that tribes chose to settle in the vicinity of Sessenheim between 2000 and 900 B.C., because it is from this period that the burial mound situated to the east of the village, at the place called "EBERSBERG", called by Goethe "FREDERIKENRUHE", dates. In 1880 Professor Ernst Martin from Strasbourg excavated the mound. He found several burials from different periods, some of which had been looted. The oldest one, however, was intact and contained, in addition to some feminine jewellery, an oenochoe (wine jug) in very poor condition and which could only be restored with great patience.
Professor Martin places these remains before the time of the Romans. According to him, the oenochoe dates from the 2nd century BC. A copper denarius (denarius) was also found.

The grove owes its present name to Goethe, because he and Frederika liked to meet there.
