Helmlingen

The village is located in the northwest corner of the Ortenau district, off the main road (B 36) on the lower terrace of the Rhine. The Roman settlement discovered in recent years during excavation of excavations in the new construction area “Am Stein” has met with great interest among archaeologists and local historians. The first signs of this were already in 1954. The finds have grown into a collection of cultural and historical value, which can be seen in the Hanauer Museum in Kehl. They form unmistakable evidence of settlement in the 1st to 3rd centuries AD.
Helmlingers were also involved in the storming of the Schwarzach monastery in 1525. in 1590 Helmlingen counted 125 souls. The devastating floods of the Rhine and the manorial ownership greatly hampered the development. During the 30-year war the village had to share the terrible fate of the neighboring villages and was almost completely destroyed in 1647. Helmlingen also suffered during the later turmoil of war, as did the neighboring communities. By 1790, the village had grown again to about 390 inhabitants. In February 1945, the village was under fire, with almost all houses damaged and one house completely destroyed.
