Description

Roeschwoog and its surroundings must have been inhabited since ancient times, as shown by a bronze cup from the Halstatt period (-800 to -400 BC) found on the outskirts of the town. The region has probably remained occupied over the centuries, perhaps discontinuously. The evolution of its appellation over time would mean that the village was located near "ponds where hemp was retted (macerated)". In the Middle Ages, the cultivation of this plant was developed and swamps with ponds bordered the wide bed of the Rhine. It is this typical Ried landscape (marshes) that gave its name to the small region stretching between the Haguenau forest and the Rhine: Riedgau or Uffried.
