Chapel "Paul Messner"

Dr. Paul Messner (1823-1886), ""noticed in his time for his faith and the help he gave to the sick"", designed the plans of this chapel, built it and decorated it between 1870 and 1880 with paintings of biblical essences in which a 50th of characters in bas-reliefs made of ceramics and representing angels and saints are mixed.

The ogival choir houses an altar above which is depicted a descent of the cross, Mary holding the body of her son Jesus. The tomb, on one side of the altar, is shown sealed while it is open on the other side.

At the top of the diaphragm arch is painted the Resurrection.

The side walls show scenes from the Beatitudes where an angel in relief leans against a pillar that displays the corresponding text.


The complex was restored between 1986 and 1990 under the direction of architect Jean-Marie Scheydecker. At the end of the work, the chapel was inaugurated by Bishop Léon-Arthur Elchinger, Bishop Emeritus of Strasbourg and a child of the village.
