The old trade of oil miller was very widespread at one time and it was not unusual to find an oil mill in villages. So the rape seed, poppy seed and walnut harvests could be processed locally straight away. The machinery in an oil mill usually consisted of a large enough room in hard-packed earth, in the middle of which a round millstone or sandstone construction was set up. A channel was hollowed out all around the top of this stone to collect the precious liquid that resulted from the seeds being crushed by two large round millstones drawn by a horse or a harnessed ox.
