Built from 1941 onwards by the German government, the peasant housing estate consists of three types of housing: small 'Arbeiter Wonhäuser' for the workers, medium-sized farms for the 'Mittlere Landwirt' (farmers) and large 'Erbhöfe', which are hereditary farms, supposed to be handed down from generation to generation.
This operation is part of the reconstruction programme of the so-called "New Order" municipalities, which allows the application of Nazi theories: modernisation, functionality, reorganisation of society. It is also a propaganda operation.
The peasant town of Marckolsheim is a remarkable example of the rural constructions of the New Order in Alsace.
