The stadtgraben is a water ditch, a remnant of the Marckolsheim fortifications built from 1330 onwards. One entered the town through two gates surmounted by a tower - called tower-porches: the Strasbourg Gate to the north and the Brisach Gate to the south. Remains of the north gate can still be seen on the bridge over the moat. The walls were partially destroyed in 1637 and the fortifications were completely razed to the ground around 1835.
