The source of the River Ill

The River Ill emerges at the heart of the Alsatian Jura, in Winkel, in the middle of the Illensprung, 600m above sea level. At 217 km long, it forms the backbone of Alsace and flows into the Rhine at GAMBSHEIM, north of Strasbourg.

Since May 2003, an artwork by Anne Rochette has served as a setting for the fledgling river. For the artist, the roundness of the sculptures evokes both the surrounding hills and femininity, which is often associated with springs in folk art. Higher Up, 10 large ""pebbles"" symbolize drops of water which, like so many resurgences, recall that the birth of a river is always diffused. Text by Marc Glotz
