Exhibition by Jacques Herrmann - Stratigraphie

The André Malraux Contemporary Art Centre in Colmar is presenting an exhibition by the artist Jacques Herrmann, entitled ‘Stratigraphie’. 

Through abstract, minimalist, optical and haptic approaches, he explores the nature, history and perception of painting. His work, which is both sophisticated and accessible, explores the limits of the medium whilst celebrating its diversity.
Jacques Herrmann seeks to evoke a sensory experience of painting by playing with the concepts of appearance and disappearance, and the effects of presence and absence, revelation and concealment. He also plays with accumulations and repetition.

Some of his works — the ‘stratigraphies’ featured in the exhibition — consist of several superimposed multicoloured layers which are then carefully sanded down, sometimes to the very limit, to reveal the different strata. This process gives rise to vibrant, colour-rich canvases, with each stratum interacting with the one before and after it, in a formal interplay that evokes geology.

For Jacques Herrmann, painting is a field of boundless experimentation, in constant dialogue with space and other disciplines.
