Description

Well before Temple Saint-Etienne was built, it was a catholic church, the foundations of which dated back to the 5th century, that overlooked Place de la Reunion square, called Stephanplaz at the time. Its cemetery was moved close to Sainte-Marie church in 1559. When the Reformation reached Mulhouse, it became a protestant church and one of Mulhouse's main political and religious centres. Knocked down in 1859 to make room for the current Temple Saint-Etienne, its location is now shown by grey paving stones in Place de la Réunion.
