In the 19th century this street was home to large Paris-style shops, the leading example of which is the Globe, which is still in business. A pedestrian and commercial artery, it has retained some beautiful old façades such as the 18th century Vogel hotel, the Art Déco building housing the FNAC and the birthplace of Captain Alfred Dreyfus. Named after the old "A l'homme sauvage" (The Wild Man) inn located there, it was renamed "Adolf Hitler Strasse" during the Occupation, which gave rise to a degree of mockery with people drawing parallels with the street's former name!
