Description

After the return of the Jews in 1798 - there had been no Jewish families in Mulhouse since the early 16th century - Jewish worship took place in various places of worship, which soon became too cramped. A new synagogue built by J-B Schacre was inaugurated in 1849. The architect played on differences in proportion and materials, creating a disproportion between a high, wide nave with slender openings and narrow, low aisles with squat openings.
