This challenging hike takes place almost entirely in the forest, making it a particularly pleasant route on hot summer days. However, there are a few viewpoints from which you can admire the Petit Rombach valley.
Please note: access to the ruins of Échéry Castle is not secured and is strongly discouraged.
Built in the 13th century on a rocky outcrop, Échéry Castle was constructed by the lords of Eckerich, who operated the first silver mines in the Val d’Argent. After the line died out in 1381, the castle was divided between the Ribeaupierre family and the Duke of Lorraine. The strained relations between the two families even led to the construction of a wall separating their living quarters. Burned down during the Thirty Years’ War, around 1630–1635, the castle has remained in ruins ever since.
