Built in 1890, the church was intended to bring together Protestant families from the upper Villé and Haute-Bruche valleys, who had no church of their own in the area. Kaiser Wilhelm II's wife, Augusta Victoria, personally helped finance the building. The site is steeped in religious history, with the presence of Mennonites and Reformed Protestants in these high valleys, as well as in military and civil history, being located on the Franco-German border of the Blue Line of the Vosges.
