A first chapel seems to have existed in Urbeis as early as the 16th century. In 1665, a chapel is mentioned "Saint Nicolas, at the top of the village", probably next to the old cemetery. A new building was erected in 1752 in the centre of the village, on the site of the present church. This small rectangular building, still dedicated to Saint Nicolas, was razed in 1789. While the troubles of the Revolution had not yet reached the valley, the village built a new sanctuary and used stones salvaged from the ruins of the Bilstein castle.
