The church in Steige, with its bell tower built into the facade, gives an impression of solid and quiet strength today. This was not always the case when one considers the events that marked its construction in the 19th century. Indeed, as in other communes, strong dissensions arose between the supporters of an extension of the old church and those of the construction of a new building. After the controversies which went as far as the dismissal of the municipal council in 1854, the second solution was adopted, despite the high cost which put a heavy burden on the communal finances which depended essentially on forestry revenues.
