Military cemetery of Thanvillé

The German military cemetery was established in Thanvillé in March 1921 by the French military authorities. After the first border skirmishes in August 1914 and the positional battles of 1915 to 1918, some German soldiers found their final resting place here. A total of 355 German soldiers lie in individual graves. 290 German soldiers (74 victims remain unknown) lie in a mass grave. Many of the soldiers buried here were victims of the fighting in the area on August 18, 1914, and before the valley was liberated in 1918. At the entrance to the cemetery, there is a name book (Namenbuch), which lists the surname, first name, rank and date of the dead soldier. It is also possible to research the history of regiments or monuments on the Internet. Entering from the right, along the wall, is a series of eight tombs belonging to the de Castex and de Dartein families, the lords of Château de Thanvillé, whose coats of arms appear on the first two tombs. The fifth tomb is that of Bertrand Pierre de Castex, General of the Empire (his name is engraved on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris).
