Saint Wendelin Church

Situated on the hillside, above the beautiful Place du Tilleul, the present church of Albé, dedicated to Saint Wendelin, dates from 1752 (the patron saint is already mentioned in 1341 for a church erected by Bishop Berthold of Strasbourg).
This church fell victim, at Whitsunday 1575, as did 45 surrounding houses, to the terrible fire that ravaged the village. The present building stands on the site of the old chapel, which was affected by the 1575 fire and demolished (minus the ground floor of the tower).
The vault of the choir is decorated with motifs dedicated to the Sacred Heart, a cult that developed widely at the end of the 17th century. The altar is characteristic of the 18th century. The antependium is richly decorated with stylised leaves, garlands and foliage, the asymmetry of which is in keeping with the aesthetics of the authentic Baroque. The church in Albé was equipped with a Stiehr organ in 1839, which was pneumatised in 1918.
The instrument was modified in 1970 by Schwenkedel, who installed a new zinc front. The case remains original.
