This place of remembrance was created on the site of the former synagogue of Quai Kléber, which was burnt down by the Nazis in 1940.
A haven of peace in the city centre, the garden has been designed to show the outline of where the synagogue used to stand. A bronze model of the building sits at the centre of the garden.
This magnificent synagogue was built in 1898 by architect Ludwig Levy. It served as a monumental testament to the presence of the Jewish community in Strasbourg, in the same way that the cathedral signalled the presence of Catholics and Saint-Thomas symbolised the Protestant community.
A wall of names was built in the garden to record the identities of the 1,896 Holocaust victims from the Bas-Rhin, as well as the 86 people who lost their lives at the Struthof concentration camp.
