An exceptional forest partly listed as a National Nature Reserve.

A few kilometres north of Strasbourg, the national nature reserve of Robertsau and Wantzenau is an exceptional ecological area covering 710 hectares, protecting an iconic alluvial forest of the Rhine Valley. This temperate rainforest, with its lush vegetation, has remarkable biodiversity (although it is currently on the decline).

The forest, a remnant of past alluvial habitats, owes its biological diversity to the flooding of the Rhine River.   Although the river has been dammed and then transformed into a canal, it still affects the forest, through the rising water table.
The site features a mosaic of habitats, including forests and open areas, wetlands and aquatic environments, which are home to a diverse range of plants and wildlife, many species of which are on the Red List of Threatened Species in Alsace. These include the European beaver, crested newt, European eel, marsh harrier, grey-headed woodpecker, red-backed shrike, common teal, and others.

In every season, it’s a haven of peace and the perfect place for walks and exploration. Reconnect with nature, so close to Strasbourg!

Since 2020, Robertsau Forest, as well as part of Wantzenau Forest (70 hectares), have been listed as National Nature Reserves (RNN).

Note: the forest, which is easy to reach on the Forts Trail (Piste des Forts), provides great cycling opportunities.
