Fort Ducrot: discover Strasbourg’s military history

A few kilometres from Strasbourg, on the hills between Hausbergen and Mundolsheim, Fort Ducrot tells a story of exceptional military heritage, bearing witness to 150 years of the history of Alsace.

Built between 1879 and 1882 by the German authorities after the annexation of Alsace-Lorraine, Fort Podbielski (renamed Fort Ducrot after 1918) is the last and smallest fort of the ring of fortifications around Strasbourg. Set on a narrow ridge, its asymmetrical layout and original architecture distinguish it from the other forts of the Strasbourg area.

But the fort has another unique feature: in the 1930s, it was integrated into France’s defensive system and transformed into a command post of the Maginot Line. At the time, its façades were overlaid in concrete, resulting in its current appearance. This means that, in the same place, visitors can discover both the vestiges of a 19th century German fortification and the French alterations made for the Maginot Line.

The fort is currently being renovated by the Friends of Fort Ducrot. For several years, volunteers have been restoring the buildings, preserving historical items and documents and gradually reconstituting various parts of the fort.

During the tour, you’ll see barracks, corridors, a rampart, a dry moat, old military installations and the Maginot command post. It’s a fascinating dive into the history of fortifications and into key moments in the history of Strasbourg and Alsace.
