Jewish Cemetary

The Marmoutier Jewish cemetery, created in 1798, is located on the edge of the forest and contains some 500 gravestones (simple sandstone steles).


Next to the oldest of the graves is that of Moyse Raphaël, a minister who died in April 1799.
The traditional symbols of Judaism can be seen: the blessing hands of the priests, the ewer of the Levites, and the joined hands symbolising the couple.
The abbreviation of the ritual formula that closes the epitaphs can be read: "May his soul remain in the assembly of the living".


The cemetery is on the edge of the forest and can be accessed from Rue Neuve.
Take the footpath under the railway line and continue for 300 metres towards the forest.
