Hiking fortified castles and villages

Several Alsatian towns and villages have retained a medieval structure and appearance.
In the Middle Ages, towns and villages were protected by a defence system of varying scope:
Outer walls surrounding the town or village, defence towers connected by curtain walls, wall walks where defenders would patrol, and more.
Inside were the residential and official areas and places of worship.
