Lecture: “Stéphanie de Beauharnais, Grand Duchess of Baden”

Stéphanie Louise Adrienne de Beauharnais, a French imperial princess by adoption and Grand Duchess of Baden by marriage, was born in Versailles, France, on August 28, 1789, and died in Nice, in the Kingdom of Sardinia, on January 29, 1860. The daughter of Count Claude de Beauharnais, a relative by marriage of the future Empress Joséphine, she was adopted in 1806 by Napoleon I, who thereby made her a French Imperial Princess. Married shortly thereafter to the future Grand Duke Charles II of Baden, she was Grand Duchess of Baden from 1811 to 1818, and subsequently Grand Duchess Dowager.
