Description

Surbourg is known as the third stop on the Alsace Romanesque Route. Its former collegiate church of Saint-Arbogast, dating mainly from the first half of the 11th century, is an example of early Alsatian Romanesque art and stands on the foundations of the oldest abbey in the region.

The village was also home to a large Jewish community from 1550 onwards, which has since disappeared. Although the synagogue no longer exists, evidence of their presence can still be seen on a house dating from 1724, at 4 rue du Général-Leclerc, where Hebrew inscriptions can still be read.

Surbourg is accessible via the Strasbourg–Haguenau–Wissembourg railway line, with a stop at Hoelschloch-Surbourg station.
