Fortifications d'agglomération

The commune of Goersdorf was raised to the rank of town in 1348 by the Emperor Charles IV. It was protected by walls in 1335. The road from Woerth entered by the Lower gate at the bottom of the rue Principale; the Upper gate gave access to the road to Soultz-sous-Forêt near the church and Is referred to in documents in 1460. The castle was inside the walls in the north east corner of the village with a church, surrounded by a churchyard, in the higher part of the village, as well as a school and a court. The walls were protected by a moat still clearly visible on the Napoleonic land register (the cadastre). Part of it is still visible today. The gates were demolished in the 19th century (the Lower gate in 1810). Parts of the walls still remain, especially in the south and east of the town built with sandstone blocks, about 1. 70m thick.
