Stolpersteine is a project by Berlin-born artist Gunter Demnig. He works on artistic memorial projects concerning deportees. Since 1992, he has been laying memorial paving stones with brass plaques engraved with messages to ensure that no-one forgets the deportation and extermination of Jews, nomads (Manouches, Roms, Yéniches, etc.), political deportees, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, the disabled and all the victims of Nazism.
The paving stone was laid in front of the house where Jules Jonas Meyer was born in 1882. In 1940, his business was confiscated by the Nazi regime and he fled to Paris. During the Vél d'Hiv roundup in 1942, he was arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where he died 3 months later.
