Description

Bernolsheim is a village located about 17 km north of Strasbourg. Tombs attest to the occupation of the Bernolsheim site since Gallo-Roman times. After the advent of the Hasbourg in 1272, Bernolsheim became an empire village and joined the Grand Bailiwick of Haguenau (Landvogtei), which explains why it remained Catholic although it was given to the Lichtenbergs and then to the Lampertheim in fief from 1332. Bernolsheim was part of the Batzendorf Provost Office (Schultheissenamt) until 1789. In 1476, the commune had 19 families. In 1637, during the Thirty Years' War, the inhabitants of Bernolsheim had to take refuge in Schiltigheim to escape the fighting and in 1664, the village suffered from the fires caused by Turenne's troops.
