The village of Champenay is known for its grey sandstone with white veins from the Permian age. It resulted from deposits from a river delta or the banks of a lake in a dry climate. The sandstone was mined from 1757. It is also known as "Princes sandstone" in reference to the region's former masters, the princes of Salm. Champenay sandstone is the densest and most resistant sandstone in the Vosges region and can be polished like granite. The other outstanding feature of Champenay is the modern stained-glass windows in the chapel, made by the artists Lothar Quinte and Sibylle Wagner. If you would like to visit, ask the owners of the houses just before the chapel for the keys.
