"Solbach" is thought to come from the German, "salt stream". The village was originally much lower down in the valley. After repeated attacks during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), it was almost wiped off the map. The villagers who survived settled as high up in the valley as possible to hide from the enemy armies, as they moved along the River Bruche below.
