The hamlet of Bourg is at the edge of the sandy plateau of Saâles, at the foot of the Solamont. Bourg is thought to date back to the 13th century.
The hamlet of Bruche may have been founded in the 7th century. It grew up around the toll bridge over the Bruche, hence its original German name of "Bruck" ("bridge" in German).
Bourg-Bruche was a defensive fortress, obstructing enemies moving through the Bruche valley. It was also a very good observation point over the old trading road, Les Saulniers (Villé<>Saint-Blaise-La-Roche), which was very busy in the Middle Ages.
