Rothau

Rothau was once an industrial centre (mining and then textiles). It was well known for the excellent quality of its iron (used to make bladed weapons). The Steinheil textile factories were also the main workplaces for many of the area's inhabitants in the early 20^th century. In the centre of Rothau, you can see: 1. Rothau Castle, dating from the 15^th century (not open to visitors), which has been restored many times but is still recognised with its two small towers at the sides. 2. Rothau church, built in 1863 and based on plans by the architect from Colmar, Louis Michel Boltz, who also designed the Donon temple. The building features a surprising façade in neo-Renaissance style and a semi-circular interior with a tribune above it.
