Falle lake and the Champenay stained-glass windows and quarry

Add to your selection
Description

Falle lake was originally a reservoir supplying the Champenay blast furnace (mining industry) in the 17th century.

In the centre of Champenay is a small chapel. The artists Lothar Quinte and Sibylle Wagner created three magnificent stained-glass windows in a contemporary style when the building was restored. Visit on request, pick up keys from the owners of the houses just before the chapel.

The village of Champenay is also known for its sandstone, called "Princes sandstone". It is the hardest (polishable) sandstone in Alsace, streaked with shades of pink. It has been mined for centuries.
