Description

Salm Castle was built by Count Henri III of Salm in the early 13th century on the lands of Senones Abbey, which was under his protectorship. In the 16th century, the Salm family took control of the region to the detriment of the abbey. The sovereignty of the county was shared between two branches of the Salm family. In 1751, the county became the principality of Salm-Salm, which became part of France in 1793 within the Vosges department. The ruins of Salm Castle were listed in 1898 and are currently being consolidated by the association Les Veilleurs de Salm. On a future hike, make sure you explore the themed Salm Castle trail available from the Tourist Office or from bit.ly/brochuresOTVB.
