Schirmeck is situated in the centre of the valley. It was an industrial centre from the 18th century. First with the mining industry, mainly in Rothau and Grandfontaine, and then from the 19th century, with the textile industry. The factories were built in the Bruche valley because of easy access (development of the railways) and the driving force of water.
In La Broque, after the railway line, you will see: 1- On your right, the Protestant Gothic church built for German Lutheran civil servants after German annexation in 1870. 2- On your left, the site of the Schirmeck-Vorbrück camp, dating from the Second World War (booklet available from the Tourist Office or on bit.ly/brochuresOTVB).
