i The name "Champ du Feu" shows the linguistic deformations occurring in history. Theories differ about its origins. One is that it comes from the animals left to graze on the summits, then known as "Vieh Feld" ("animal field" in Alemannic), which later turned into "Champ des Vieh" then "Champ du Feu" (Field of Fire).
