A spiritual and sensory journey into the heart of various traditions: an immersive symbolic narrative, song, theorbo, and ancient texts.
The onset of night is always a special transition that accompanies every day of our lives. The night, with its enveloping darkness and deafening silence, can be both a moment of anxiety—because it is dangerous—and a time of rest when all is still. The night is the realm of the dead, yet it is also starry; its mantle protects us.
The Ancients felt deeply this very special sensation that one can experience as night approaches and during the night itself, and they personified Night—but also, and above all, the Dawns (the beginning and end of the night)—through various deities. So we will set out together on a symbolic journey through the night, accompanied by the Indian goddess of the forest, Ara¿yani´.
This performance will unfold as a rite-of-passage narrative in which we will journey with the souls of the dead and the creatures of the night. Texts and songs from different cultures and traditions, in various languages—ancient, traditional, and lyrical songs (ancient tradition, Jewish tradition, classical Western culture, opera)— texts in Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, French, and Hebrew, will illuminate our path into the depths of the world as prayers to Nature and to the Divine that resides deep within each of us.
The theorbo, a large Baroque lute, accompanies this journey like a voice from the shadows. Its deep, resonant tone dialogues with the night, supports the voice, and opens a space for inner listening. An instrument of chiaroscuro, it becomes the sonic thread connecting silence, text, and song.
The deep tones of this ancient instrument harmonize with the movements of the soul and the narrative, grounding it in the diverse cultures and musical styles of the program.
The accompaniment for each piece has been carefully crafted and adapted to suit the specific styles and atmospheres of the performance. Solo pieces provide moments of respite between different eras and cultures.
For those interested, this spiritual performance will be preceded by an explanatory and participatory workshop on the Sanskrit text that inspired the show and on the ancient techniques I will use to chant the texts, as well as a short walk in the forest at dusk. These bonus activities will help you prepare to receive what you will hear in the performance by internalizing that very special state of transition into night.
A convivial meal will also be offered after the performance so you can share your impressions.
