As the patron saint of miners, firefighters, bomb disposal experts, and artillerymen, Saint Barbara has endured through the centuries, straddling the line between legend and popular devotion. Invoked for protection against accidents, explosions, and lightning, she holds a special place in the traditions of professions exposed to danger. The exhibition invites visitors to explore various themes related to Saint Barbara, from her legend to her role as the protector of miners, firefighters, and artillerymen. It also invites visitors to discover how her cult developed and evolved over the centuries in Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, as well as in the Middle East. In all these regions, this figure has given rise to beliefs, representations, and traditions that are sometimes different but always marked by the quest for protection from danger. Beyond the religious dimension, the exhibition also highlights the customs and popular celebrations associated with Saint Barbara, bearing witness to a cultural heritage that remains very much alive. Much more than a religious celebration, Saint Barbara’s Day is also a popular festival, eagerly awaited by miners and their families. It is a time for gathering, sharing, and fellowship, symbolizing solidarity and brotherhood among workers. Through this exhibition, the French Petroleum Museum aims to highlight how deeply this tradition remains tied to the history and identity of mining regions, particularly that of Pechelbronn. It is an opportunity to discover Saint Barbara from a new perspective and to reconnect with a tradition that blends legend, protection, memory, and popular celebration.
