Gougenheim

Gougenheim was the seat of a local episcopal court whose jurisdiction extended to property and persons. In 1474, the village, which was then fortified, became the capital of the bailiwick of Kochersberg. It was under the jurisdiction of the prince-bishop of Strasbourg. As the direct representative of the Lord Bishop, the bailiff resided here. The bishop's court sat in the "Laube", which stood on the site of the town hall (or between the town hall and the church).
The village of Gougenheim is not crossed by a busy road. It is equipped with explanatory signs marking out a route through the village.
On the route, we will notice the built heritage of beautiful Alsatian houses, a bread oven, the emblem of the trade of executioner and knacker, the presbytery, a barrack rebuilt in the garden of the presbytery used to house young girls incorporated into the Reicharbeitsdienst during the last world war, the Chapel of St. Lawrence, a lapidary exhibition of beautiful old tombstones around the parish church.
