The Hartmannswillerkopf summit cross

Built at the highest point of the Hartmannswillerkopf at an altitude of 956 m, this concrete cross is part of the monumental ensemble comprising the crypt, the altar of the fatherland and the necropolis. It was inaugurated on 21 September 1930.
The cross is in perfect alignment with the Altar of the Fatherland of the National Monument and the mast of the tricolour flag of the National Necropolis. Visible from all over the Alsace plain and even beyond the Rhine, it was illuminated for the first time on the night of 10-11 November 1936 and shines every evening at nightfall from the top of the battlefield.
