"Belles Danses pour une Demoiselle" (Beautiful Dances for a Damsel) based on trio pieces by Marin Marais, 1692 To celebrate its 50th anniversary, AMIA (Amis de la Musique sur Instruments Anciens) is bringing together two arts - dance and music - which, although intimately linked, are rarely associated when it comes to Baroque music. In the preface to Marais's pièces en trio, we learn that these pieces, published in 1692, were written and performed for the service of the King's Chamber. The sarabandes, minuets rigaudons and other passacailles were first composed with dancing in mind, an art that was ubiquitous at the Court of Versailles in the late 17th century. It is to this "pleasure of the eyes and ears" that dancer Isabel Devaux and the ensemble's instrumentalists invite the audience. This repertoire, in which musical and choreographic scores are read simultaneously, specifying rhythm and steps in space and time, reveals the extreme intimacy between music and dance. Music and dance, but it's also an opportunity to unmask and discover the mysterious Mademoiselle Roland for whom Marin Marais wrote his trios.
