Carrément autrement" exhibition

From icon to abstraction. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Maria Kohler-Nowak shows the evolution of her creations. After forty years of painting icons the old-fashioned way, the artist is now moving away from classical compositions - still lifes and landscapes - towards a simplified approach to form and color. Maria Kohler-Nowak's current work is characterized by a progressive simplification. Drawing on her rare expertise in ancient techniques, she is freeing herself from figuration and moving towards abstraction. This mutation translates into nuances of restricted color ranges, even to the point of monochrome.
