Mystery and mysticism

If you enjoy the fresh air, head off near Barr to the Mont Sainte-Odile.

And while you’re about it, why not walk there?

We suggest you leave your car at the Bloss crossroads (carrefour de la Bloss), which leaves you about an hour away from Mont Sainte-Odile. Don’t forget to put on your hiking shoes and your sunglasses, get your camera ready and then off you go through the forest, into the mysterious atmosphere much appreciated centuries ago by the Celts.

The track is well signposted and will take you straight to the mur païen (heathen wall), a wall right in the middle of the forest, the origins of which remain obscure, but which was built well before the convent on top of the mountain.

It will take about an hour to get up to the summit, at 763 m, where you’ll be able to see a magnificent view of Alsace, including forests, wine villages, the plain and even Strasbourg Cathedral.

When you come to Alsace, you have to visit the Mont Sainte-Odile.

You can download an app onto your smartphone for a self-guided visit to this site much frequented by pilgrims and dedicated to Saint Odile.

The tumultuous life of the Saint is literally spread over a wall. Born blind, her site was miraculously restored.

For anyone who doesn’t fancy the walk, you can drive up and park right at the top. Life’s wonderful, isn’t it?

What’s great about the site

- You don’t have to go to the Mont Sainte-Odile just for praying
- The view from the top is simply extraordinary!
