In Alsace, the Rhine is the natural border between Germany and France. Rhinau is a village on the French side, but there’s no bridge over to Germany, so what do you do if you want to go there? No panic, all you have to do is go through the village towards the Rhine, noticing on the way that, unlike most villages typical of the region, there are no half-timbered houses. When you get to the river, you’ll see the blue, white and red ferry that will take you over to the other side. Join the queue and when the light turns green you get on the boat. The trip takes between 5 and 8 minutes, so you have plenty of time to get out of your car to see where you’re going, not forgetting to put on your handbrake. As you chug over to the German side you’ll be given an escort of local ducks and seagulls (you’ll recognise them from their accent).

Then Willkommen, welcome to Germany.

Don’t be surprised when you don’t see any village on the German side, as it’s the vast Taubergiessen nature reserve, with its 1600 ha of fauna and flora, which you can explore by walking along the signposted tracks, picnic in your rucksack.
